Narberth, PA (December 30, 1991) -- MacVONK today began shipping HandiWorks, a
$175 "all-in-one" software application for Macintosh computers that eliminates
the need to switch applications or load multiple programs. Requiring only a
small amount of memory, HandiWorks combines a word processor, a spreadsheet,
basic drawing and page layout tools, and an Address Manager database. The
product includes templates for commonly used office forms, as well as
dictionaries for hyphenation and spell checking in English and Spanish.
Dictionaries for 10 other languages are also available.
HandiWorks opens as a blank page where "frames" of text, numbers (spreadsheets)
and images can be created or imported. Users determine the size, placement and
total number of frames on each page. Everything on the page is linked, no
matter how many independent frames are in the document. Whenever data is
changed, all the linked items are automatically updated.
“HandiWorks combines all the basic tools business people really use, in a way
that is truly integrated, convenient, and surprisingly conservative in terms of
both memory use and cost," said Piet Vonk, MacVONK cofounder. "We traded some
of the bells and whistles of a feature-laden product for the ability to run on
PowerBooks and older Macs, where memory constraints are a big concern. As a
result, HandiWorks is the smallest, least expensive integrated application on
the market. No other vendor offers as much functionality for such a low
price."
Macintoshes with only 1 MB RAM can run HandiWorks under System 6, the older
version of Apple's operating system software. The 2 MB RAM that comes standard
on new Macintoshes are more than sufficient for running HandiWorks under System
7. HandiWorks uses a maximum of 800K when all of its applications and features
are active. Under most circumstances, the program uses less.
HandiWorks imports and exports ASCII, Microsoft Word, WriteNow, and MacWrite
files. It also supports EPS, TIFF, PICT, PICT2, and MacPaint formats, allowing
pictures to be imported from any popular drawing program and manipulated within
HandiWorks. HandiWorks can exchange files with other word processors and
spreadsheets through Claris XTND filters. A limited number of filters ship
with HandiWorks. The full collection, including cross-platform file formats,
is sold separately.
HandiWorks is available now through MacVONK's sales offices in Canada and
Pennsylvania. The product is also distributed by Ingram Micro D and PC Micro.
The suggested retail price is $175. Claris XTND and additional foreign
language dictionaries are available through the same channels.
